Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of cooked, vinegared rice that is typically combined with raw fish, seafood, and vegetables. Making sushi at home can be a fun and rewarding experience, and it’s not as difficult as you might think. With a few basic ingredients and some practice, you can create delicious sushi rolls that are sure to impress your friends and family.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Sushi seaweed (nori)
  • Fillings of your choice (raw fish, cooked shrimp, cucumber, avocado, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. This step is important as it removes excess starch from the rice and ensures that it will be sticky and fluffy.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the water and rinsed rice. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and cover the pan with a lid. Simmer the rice for 18-20 minutes, or until all the water has been absorbed.
  3. While the rice is cooking, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan. Heat the mixture over low heat, stirring until the sugar and salt have dissolved.
  4. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large mixing bowl. Pour the vinegar mixture over the rice and gently fold it in with a spatula or wooden spoon. Be careful not to break the rice grains.
  5. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
  6. Lay a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down. Spread a thin layer of the prepared sushi rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.
  7. Place your chosen fillings in a line across the center of the rice.
  8. Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi tightly, pressing down lightly as you roll.
  9. Once the roll is complete, use a sharp knife to cut it into bite-size pieces.
  10. Serve the sushi with soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger.

Sushi making can be a fun and creative process, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different fillings and ingredients.
