Tortillas are a staple food in many cultures and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, from being filled with meats and vegetables to being used as a base for Mexican dishes such as tacos and burritos. Making tortillas at home is easy and can be a fun and delicious addition to any home-cooked meal.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of masa harina (corn flour)
  • 1 1/4 cup of warm water
  • 1/2 tsp of salt

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the masa harina and salt.
  2. Slowly add in the warm water and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and pliable.
  3. Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a ping-pong ball.
  4. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  5. Using a rolling pin, roll out each ball of dough on a lightly floured surface until it is about 1/8-inch thick.
  6. Place the tortilla onto the skillet and cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side, until it starts to puff up and become lightly browned.
  7. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
  8. Once all the tortillas are cooked, stack them and wrap them in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and pliable.

The tortillas can be enjoyed as is or filled with your favorite ingredients. They can also be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, simply place them in a skillet over low heat for a few minutes, or wrap them in foil and heat in the oven.

Note: If the dough is too dry, add a little more water. If it is too wet, add a little more masa harina. The dough should be easy to roll out and not stick to your hands or rolling pin.

Enjoy your homemade tortillas! They can be served with many Mexican dishes, as well as use as a wrap for sandwiches and burritos. With this recipe, you will never have to buy store-bought tortillas again.
