Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups sifted flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
1 cup chopped walnuts
8 ounces dates, snipped or chopped
Directions:
Combine first 3 ingredients and blend into fine crumbs. Press into bottom of a greased 9 inch square pan. Bake at 350 F for about 20 minutes, until edges are lightly browned.
Combine brown sugar and remaining white sugar, eggs and vanilla and beat together well.
Sift flour and nutmeg with baking powder and salt and add to first mixture.
Stir in walnuts and dates.
Turn batter into pan over hot baked pastry layer. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.
Cool in pan, sprinkle top with powdered sugar if desired. Cut into 18 bars.
